Happy Tummies

The Happy Tummies Study

The Happy Tummies Study is a nutrition research study designed to look at the gut health and immune systems of infants that are fed exclusively breast-milk, Similac Advance, or Similac Soy Isomil formula during the first 3 months of life.

For babies exclusively fed Similac Advance:
Mom and baby will attend 4 visits, starting with the first visit when baby is 1 month old. At the 1-month and 2-month old visits we will provide Similac Advance formula, ask about baby’s nutrition, and obtain some body measurements on baby. These visits will each last about an hour. At the 3-month old visit, we will ask medical history questions, obtain some body temperature and composition measurements on baby, and perform blood, urine, stool, and cheek swab collection. This visit will last about 4 hours. We will also ask mom to complete a 3-day food record. At the fourth visit, we will ask mom to bring back the completed food records and stool samples. To thank you for your participation, a 3-month supply of Similac Advance formula and diapers will be provided.

For babies exclusively breastfeeding or fed Similac Soy Isomil:
Mom and baby will attend 1 study visit when baby is 3 months old. At this visit we will ask medical history questions, obtain some body temperature and composition measurements on baby, and perform blood, urine, stool, and cheek swab collection. The visit will last about 4 hours. We will also ask mom to complete a 3-day food record and provide a breast milk sample if breast-feeding. At the second visit we will ask mom to bring back the completed food records, breast milk sample, and stool samples. To thank you for your participation, a 3-month supply of diapers will be provided.
